The transition back to school is often a mix of excitement and nerves — not just for the children but for us parents too. New routines, busy mornings, homework, after-school activities, and a full day of emotions can leave little ones (and us!) feeling tired, anxious, or overwhelmed.
Essential oils are a gentle, natural way to support children through this shift. From helping them wind down for restful sleep, to lifting their mood in the morning, calming nerves at school, and aiding concentration during homework time — essential oils can bring comfort and balance to daily life.
👉 Please note: these suggestions are suitable for children aged 5 and over, unless otherwise stated. Always dilute appropriately, and less is more when it comes to little ones.
Restful Night’s Sleep
Sleep is the foundation for a happy, focused school day. If your child struggles to switch off, essential oils can help create a calming bedtime routine.Helpful oils: Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Frankincense.
Morning Motivation
Mornings can feel rushed and stressful. Uplifting oils can bring energy, positivity, and a brighter start to the day.Helpful oils: Wild Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Spearmint.
Calming School Day Anxiety
It’s natural for children to feel a little anxious — whether it’s a new class, new friends, or just the pressures of school life. Gentle calming oils can help bring reassurance.Helpful oils: Lavender, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense.
After-School Emotions
Many parents will know that the after-school hours can sometimes be the trickiest — children hold it together all day and then release big feelings once they’re home. Essential oils can help to restore balance and calm.Helpful oils: Geranium, Lavender, Frankincense, Mandarin.
Concentration & Focus
When it’s time for homework or study, focus can be a challenge. Certain oils can help sharpen the mind and support concentration.Helpful oils: Lemon, Frankincense. (For older children and teens, Rosemary, Peppermint, and Basil may also be used).
A Note on Safety
Suitable for children aged 5+ (unless otherwise stated).
Always dilute essential oils before use — children need much lower concentrations than adults.
Avoid strong oils such as Peppermint, Rosemary, Basil, Eucalyptus globulus, and all “hot” oils (Oregano, Clove, Cinnamon, Thyme) for younger children.
Diffusion or rollers are the gentlest, safest ways to use oils with little ones.
