I'm sure some of you are thinking, "Why bother making your own, Wendy? You do realise you can get this in the supermarket?" 🛒
Yep, and for so many years, I never questioned these products! Marketed as convenient, easy to use, and keeping our home clean and safe. 🏡✨
I also wondered why I was struggling so much with hormonal imbalances, headaches, skin issues, fatigue, aches and pains, and so much more... 😩💥
It honestly feels like a light has been switched on! 💡 I don't think I will ever bring these products into our home again, and I feel great for it! 🌿🙌
Many people choose to stop using shop-bought dishwasher tablets and laundry powder and other household cleaning products due to concerns over harmful chemicals and their impact on health and the environment. Here's why:
Chemicals Commonly Found in UK Products:
Phosphates – Found in some dishwasher tablets but restricted in laundry detergents due to EU regulations. Still harmful to waterways.
Chlorine Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) – Used in some stain removers and whitening products but can irritate skin and lungs.
Synthetic Fragrances and Perfumes – Often made from petroleum-based chemicals, linked to skin irritation and allergies.
Optical Brighteners – Found in many laundry powders, designed to leave a residue that makes fabrics appear whiter but can irritate sensitive skin.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – A common foaming agent, potentially harsh on skin.
Benzisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone – Preservatives that can cause skin reactions.
Plastic Microcapsules – Used in some fragranced detergents, contributing to microplastic pollution.
Health Risks:
Skin Irritation: Contact dermatitis, eczema triggers.
Respiratory Issues: Fragrance chemicals can worsen asthma symptoms.
Hormone Disruption: Some synthetic chemicals may interfere with hormone balance.
Water Pollution: Residues often persist in waterways, affecting aquatic life.
How Simple Is It to Make Your Own?
DIY Dishwasher Tablets:
1 cup bicarbonate of soda
1/4 cup citric acid
1/4 cup coarse salt (table salt or dishwasher salt)
1 1/2 TBSP of Onguard Concentrate (Doterra) or 2 tablespoons white vinegar
Essential oil – 10-15 drops of Lemon or tea tree for antimicrobial properties
Method: Mix the dry ingredients. Slowly add the On Guard / vinegar until the mixture feels like damp sand. Press into moulds and let dry overnight. The mixture will expand in the moulds so just keep pressing it down with the back f a spoon until it settles.
DIY Laundry Powder:
3 cups bicarbonate of soda - removes tough staines
3 cups washing soda (sodium carbonate) – Sold as soda crystals - eliminates odours and softener
1 cup of salt - Keeps colours vibrant
A few drops essential oil – 20-30 drops of Lemon or Lavender
Method:Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load.
Why Make the Switch?
Healthier: Avoids harsh chemicals linked to skin and respiratory issues.
Eco-Friendly: Reduces plastic waste and water pollution.
Cost-Effective: Simple ingredients are affordable and widely available in UK supermarkets.
Customisable: Fragrance-free or naturally scented.
